"Macho Man" Randy Savage - Be a Man (2003)

I was a fan of Randall Mario Poffo, better known to the world at large as Randy "Macho Man" Savage as a kid. His on-mic hijinx were second only to two other favorites of mine from back in the day, Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes....

I was saddened to hear about his passing and decided to share a little bit of nuttiness he left behind for us to all enjoy, his 2003 rap album, Be a Man

From Wikipedia:

On October 7, 2003, Savage released a rap album titled Be a Man. It includes a tribute to "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig as well as a diss track aimed at Hulk Hogan. While more a fan of hard rock, he chose rap due to his lack of singing ability. Savage promoted Be A Man with a concert tour featuring Brian Adams as his bodyguard and Ron Harris as touring manager. During this time, the development of a second album was already in progress with Savage exclaiming, "We are absolutely going to have more records." However, no further albums were released.

April March (real name Elinor Blake, born in California, April 20, 1965) is an American indie pop singer/songwriter who sings in English and French. She is widely known for the song "Chick Habit", which was featured in the films But I'm a Cheerleader and Death Proof. She has also been a cartoon animator, including a stint as a principal animator for the Ren and Stimpy Show. She is married to Warren Zanes, musician and former Vice-President of Education at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio, and has two sons.

Scorpio Rising is a 1964 experimental film by Kenneth Anger, author of the Hollywood Babylon books, starring Bruce Byron as the biker Scorpio. It features themes of leather-clad bikers, the occult, Jesus and Nazis. Its camp appropriation of popular culture included an innovative use of pop music, the erotic cult of James Dean, and Sunday comics. The film was initially shown on the underground film circuit. The film features no dialogue. Instead, Anger incorporated music from popular 1950s and 1960s artists including Ricky Nelson, The Angels, The Crystals, Bobby Vinton, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. It is considered to be one of the first post-modern films and an influence to future directors such as Martin Scorsese and David Lynch.

One of the worst ideas for a musical ever...and I love it.

Although the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band debuted at #5 in the U.S. Billboard album charts and stayed there for six weeks, becoming a multi-platinum album, there was reported resistance to the interpretation of The Beatles' songs, such as Martin's comedic take on "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". However Earth, Wind & Fire's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" became a million selling single and Aerosmith's "Come Together" charted in the top 40 and later appeared on the soundtrack for Armageddon.

Radio airplay trailed off when the film was released with poor reviews, only five weeks later. The album immediately dropped out of the top 100 and pre-sale shipments to USA failed to sell in the quantities predicted. Owing to low box office receipts the film failed to make back its production costs, but profits from the sound track album and the successful singles it spawned later covered those losses.

Nocturna, Granddaughter of Dracula OST (1979)

I just sat through this vampire/ disco/ belly-dancing fiasco, and must admit that the story behind the film is a thousand times more interesting than the film itself, and here it is, according to Vinnie Rattolle:

Okay, so the longer version of the story... Bellydancer Nai Bonet first appeared in America in the 1960s, adorning album covers, making infrequent appearances in films and on television and she also recorded the cheesy novelty song "Jelly Belly" (she filmed a music video of the tune for now-obscure video jukeboxes called Scopitones). As the '70s were ushered in, Bonet decided to set her sights full-time on acting but, unfortunately, she found roles were few and far between. She took small supporting parts in the now-forgotten flicks "Soul Hustler," "The Soul of Nigger Charley," "The Greatest," and she appeared as Sheherazade in the goofy softcore musical sex romp "Fairy Tales." However, Nai yearned to sink her teeth into something bigger.

Bonet's story was moronically simple: Dracula's granddaughter, Nocturna, hops into bed with a disco guitarist and then decide she's in love with him, but the Count is against their courtship, so she flees Transylvania with her new beau and heads to New York City. Bonet set up the production company "Nai Bonet Productions, Ltd." in her apartment and went searching for investors. If internet rumors are to be believed, she acquired the cash from William Callahan, a child actor turned construction businessman who was apparently embezzling funds and had ties to the mob that resulted in his brutal murder in 1981. But that's a whole other story that seems to be steeped in a lot of alleged facts. In any event, Bonet raised $200,000 from whomever and set out to make her movie.

American Graffiti Promo CD (1998)

Recently, while going through my CD collection, I came across this little oddity. It was originally packaged with the (I believe, assuming from the copyright date: 1998) 25th Anniversary VHS release of George Lucas' AMERICAN GRAFFITI. I remember purchasing this VHS release, and was amused by the clever little promotional CD which was packaged with it, and intrigued by it's odd shape (see above picture). Over the last decade plus, I've listened to the disc a few times, amazed that a CD player would recognize the disc, what with it's devience from the standard circular shape....

When I came across it again a few days ago, I figured it'd be a nice little piece of promo weirdness to throw up here on the blog, and then....after a decade, the little bastard decides it's not gonna play...nor will any of numerous DVD or CD drives recognize it, thus losing my ability to rip the tracks contained on it.

So....basically, I decided to share it anyway. Going through my massive music collection (several hundred vinyls and CDs, plus nearly 350 G of sound files) I was able to track down the tracks I believe (if memory doesn't fail me) this weird shaped little CD contained...and if I'm not 100% accurate (I'm pretty sure I'm at least 75%), then what you get is a nice little sampler of tracks that are contained on the AMERICAN GRAFFITI OST proper....enjoy!

I've been curious for years about the CD's credited manufacturer: ShapeCD, Inc. I've wondered from time to time if they produced any other discs, and if so, what did they look like?

Yubiwaza!: A Tribute to Sho Kosugi

There was one word you could throw into a film title that would immediately spark my attention and enthuasim with when I was a kid growing up: NINJA.

Due to my interest in the black robed masters of stealth and assassination, I came to become a HUGE fan of what I've come to call the Sho Kosugi Quadrilogy, four ninja themed films starring action star Sho Kosugi, namely Enter the Ninja (1981), Revenge of the Ninja (1983), Ninja III: The Domination (1984), and Pray For Death (1985).

With this post, I'm sharing a compilation of music that was presented in those four films...I've taken the liberty of naming the tracks myself, with the exception of the Peggy Abernathy track "Back to the Shadows", which seems to be the only track amongst these that is titled. The rest is atmosphere music conducted by the respective films score composers.

Rooster: Spurs of Death! (Unauthorized OST EP)

I love this little gem of a forgotten film (which has never had a DVD release, and quickly went OOP shortly after it's early 1980s VHS release). Vince Van Patten as a hillbilly kid, a crazy midget, a visit to a whorehouse, slow motion chicken fights...what else could anyone want from a hixploitation flick (my word)?

What is a hixploitation movie? Well...in my definition it's any film that exploits the lifestyle and culture of rural folk...y'know...hillbillis. The last "minority" in American culture we still feel comfortable making fun of the stereotypes.

I discovered Rooster quite by accident...for years as a kid, it seemed like every little mom n pop video rental place in my small rural farmland community in West Union, Ohio had a copy...but they always for some odd reason had it stocked in their horror sections...so for years, I assumed it was some kinda crazy "nature goes wild" scary flick (that seemed to pop up alot in the 1970s) with chickens. Years later, I ran across my ancient VHS copy at a local fleamarket, and mistakenly assumed that it might have been a film that I'd read about a few years earlier (yet had not yet seen), the Monte Hellman directed/ Warren Oates starring Cockfighter, which I probably first read about in college while flipping through my dog-earred copy of Roger Corman's book, How I Made 100 Movies In Hollywood (and Never Lost A Dime)...I knew that Cockfighter had been re-released under a few alternate titles, and I thought that Rooster may have been one of them. Boy...was I wrong....

Mad Magazine Presents Up The Academy (Extended OST, 1980)

This is probably one of my favorite OSTs, not only from the period that it was produced, but quite possibly ever. It's a nice mix of early 80s power pop and the (then) fledgling scene of the American "New Wave". I'm a huge Cheap Trick and Sammy Hagar fan, and Hagar's "Bad Reputation" is one of my all-time favorites of his work.

Spurred on by recently purchasing a copy of the film on DVD (for 3 bucks at a local Big Lots, of all places) and re-watching it for the first time in probably 20 years, I was inspired not only to share my vinyl of this particular soundtrack, but also add a few tracks to it that appear in the film, but not on the OST.

Jefferson Starship- "Light the Sky on Fire" (from the Star Wars Holiday Special)

I recently came into possession of a copy of this promo vinyl, and thought about holding off until this Christmas on posting it, keeping with the theme carried by the infamous holiday special it's featured in...but decided against it because the song actually has nothing to with Christmas....

Oh, the 1970s were not kind to Jefferson Airplane...I mean, "Starship"....gone were the days of thoughtful free-form psychedelic ramblings (and by this point in time, so was Grace Slick) and the "in" things were weird sci-fi concept albums and studio-driven power pop attempts...

Towards the end of 1978, Jefferson Starship (now without Grace Slick) recorded "Light the Sky on Fire" for The Star Wars Holiday Special and their forthcoming greatest hits album Gold. Gold, highlighting their work from 1974's Dragon Fly through to 1978's Earth, was released early the following year. "Light the Sky on Fire" (backed with Sears' and Slick's "Hyperdrive", from Dragon Fly) was included as a bonus single in the original packaging of album. (When Gold was issued on CD, both tracks were included on the album.)

"Harper Valley PTA"-Jeannie C. Riley (Plantation PLP1, 1968)

One of the first films I can remember seeing at a drive-in movie theater was the goofy ass comedy starring Barbara Eden that was inspired by the title track from this album. I was going through some old records and decided to post it here....

Interesting side note: I can remember one of the reasons why my parents went to see this flick was that during it's production, my hometown of West Union, Ohio was in the running to be the principle filming location, but lost out at the last minute to Jackson, Ohio, town about an hour east, that also later served as some of the filming locations for some of the Eric Roberts-starring Best of the Best karate fight movies...

"Harper Valley PTA" is a country music song written by Tom T. Hall. It was a major hit single for country singer Jeannie C. Riley in 1968, and crossed over to the pop charts as well, eventually selling over six million copies as a single, making Riley the first woman ever to top the U.S. pop and country singles charts with the same song. (Her accomplishment would not be repeated until 1981, when Dolly Parton topped the country and pop singles charts with "9 to 5".)

The song tells the story of a junior high student who is sent home with a note to her widowed single mother from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school decrying her scandalous behavior by small-town standards. The mother decides to speak to a meeting of the PTA where she addresses various episodes of misbehavior on the part of several of its members, concluding, "This is just a little Peyton Place / And you're all Harper Valley hypocrites."

In an interview, Hall admitted his inspiration for the song was passing by the Harpeth Valley Elementary School in Bellevue, Tennessee, not far from his then-home in Franklin. He liked the sound of the name and decided to write a song using a similar place name. He also reportedly wrote the song about Olive Hill, Kentucky where Hall grew up.

The song was later the inspiration for a 1978 motion picture and a 1981 television series, both starring Barbara Eden, playing the heroine of the song, Stella Johnson.

Other songs on the album tell more about some of the people who are members of the Harper Valley P.T.A., including Mayor Harper and Widow Jones.

Jeannie C. Riley's recording of the song won her a Grammy for the Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.

Piledriver: The Wrestling Album 2 (1987)

Piledriver: The Wrestling Album 2 was an album released by the World Wrestling Federation in 1987. It featured actual vocal performances from several of the wrestlers themselves.

The original vinyl LP release of Piledriver featured a head shot of Hulk Hogan wearing a construction hard hat on the front cover. As of 2007, the 20th anniversary of the original album's release, it has not yet officially appeared on the CD format in the USA, whereas every other WWF/WWE album has. It was, however, released in a small print run, distributed at WWF shows in the UK. In addition to the album, a VHS videotape version was also issued in 1987 by Coliseum Video. This tape featured music videos for 8 of the songs from the album (the songs "Crank It Up" and "Waking Up Alone" did not have music videos made for them).

This morning, I decided to break out my DVD copy of director Ron Mann's wonderful documentary Tales of the Rat Fink....

I'm a big fan of the work of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, so after watching the documentary again, felt the need to share the following albums here....

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 – April 4, 2001) was an artist and cartoonist who created the hot-rod icon Rat Fink and other extreme characters. As a custom car builder, Roth was a key figure in Southern California's "Kustom Kulture"/Hot-rod movement of the 1960s. He grew up in Bell, California, attending Bell High School, where his classes unsurprisingly included auto shop and art.

Roth is best known for his grotesque caricatures — typified by Rat Fink — depicting imaginative, out-sized monstrosities driving representations of the hot rods that he and his contemporaries built. Although Detroit native Stanley Mouse (Miller) is credited with creating the so-called "Monster Hot Rod" art form, Roth is certainly the individual who popularized it. Roth is less well known for his innovative work in turning hot rodding from crude backyard engineering, where performance was the bottom line, into a refined art form where aesthetics were equally important, breaking new ground with fiberglass bodywork.

In the 1960s, plastic models of many of Roth's cars, as well as models of Rat Fink and other whimsical creatures created by Roth, were marketed by the Revell model company.

Numerous artists were associated with Roth, including painter Robert Williams, Rat Fink Comix artist R.K. Sloane and Steve Fiorilla, who illustrated Roth's catalogs.

Roth was active in the field of counterculture art and hot-rodding his entire adult life. At the time of his death in 2001, he was working on an innovative hot-rod project involving a compact car planned as a radical departure from the dominant "tuner" performance modification style. In his later years, Roth's telephone number was listed in the directory, and he encouraged fans to contact him: he was always generous with his time and enthusiasm.

A Roth custom feared lost for many years was the subject of a number of articles in automotive enthusiast magazines in the summer of 2008. The Orbitron, built in 1964, was discovered in Mexico in late 2007. The car, in dilapidated, inoperative condition, had been parked for quite some time in front of an adult bookstore in Ciudad Juárez. The owners of the shop were also the owners of the car. It was purchased by Michael Lightbourn, an American auto restorer who did extensive business in Mexico and who in turn repatriated the car to the United States. The Orbitron has since been restored to its original condition by present owner Beau Boeckmann.

Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos

Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos was a 1960s novelty group led by Roth, who himself was known as Mr. Gasser. Formed in the early 1960s, they released a few bizarre surf rock albums, most notably 1963's Hot Rod Hootenanny. One Way Records released a 2CD-set (S22-18319) which contains the 3 LPs and the original artwork.

Digging around in some old stuff while cleaning house, I ran across my copy of the 1958 SHOCK! press book that was released to television stations by Universal Pictures to promote and sell their syndication package of classic horror and suspense films. I decided to share a scan of it, and while trying to track down some suitable audio to go along with it (so's I could post it at this blog, which is, after all, a music sharing blog), I broke out my copy of 1999's Dead Man's Ball, because nothing says syndicated horror film packages like a horror host....and nothing says horror host more than Zacherley....

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (European Theatrical Cut Unauthorized OST)

Hello. On October 28, 1978, my 4 year old mind was shattered when I watched the NBC-TV premiere broadcast airing of the film mentioned in the following post. I lived to tell the tale. Here's my story.....

I've recently went on a KISS binge, due mainly to my reaction to the recent wave of merchandising that swept through the Wal-Mart chain promoting the release of the band's (well....it's really just Gene and Paul with two new guys they've plastered Ace and Peter's makeup on) latest album offering, the Wallyworld exclusive "Sonic Boom" (which sucks ass, IMO). And even though I detest the new music, it has afforded me the opportunity to score all three season box sets of Gene Simmons' reality show for 9 bucks a pop, and picked up some otherwise pricier DVD and CD releases for cheap....I'm speaking mainly of the KISSology Volme II: 1978-1991 DVD set, which I recently discovered has a nice little surprise that several cult and b-movie fans are not aware of...it contains the European theatrical cut of KISS Meets the Phantom of the ParK (them crazy Euros call it "KISS: Attack of the Phantoms"). That...and the KISS M&M candies...I'm a sucker for candy.

So, by "binge" I mean going back and reacquainting myself with the music (I'm a fan of the original line-up, make-up era 1974-1979), reaffirming some opinions I've always held about the band. As a child, I was a Peter Criss fan, and in hindsight, seeing as how I was really too young to really dissect and formulate opinions about the music.... I was 5 when the original line-up was pretty much kaput in '79, though I did have a mother, uncle, and aunt who were HUGE fans, it was all about his stage "persona" and the cat make-up. I'm a cat person...my life-long fascination with anthropomorphic cats such as Felix, Heathcliff, and such is a testament to that. As a teen and young adult, I became a member of the Ace Frehley cult,...being a guitar enthusiast did that. Frehley truly is a genuis on the strings, plus....he's somewhat of a space-case (pun intended), a genuinely funny guy and all around eccentric. Hence the reason why his cover of "New York Groove" is presently playing on the blog's embedded jukebox...scroll down to the bottom of the page to activate it if you already haven't.

Now....the thing I love about Phantom is....all four original members detest the film, each individually on a different level. Some say this is what caused the recall on the 2005 DVD release of the NBC TV-Movie of the Week cut by Cheezy Flix (you'll be familiar with that manufacturer if you own their Billy the Kid versus Dracula disc, with the excellent Joe Bob Briggs commentary). Though, I have heard that Simmons would've liked to see it released, citing that it'd be a great midnight movie thing...though I'm thinking that's Gene "Let's slap a KISS logo on it and it's like having a license to print money" Simmons, marketing guru, speaking, and not the musician that was filling a seat on the tour bus. Oh, and then there's Ace, who wants it released because, quote: "It's the funniest shit I've ever seen." Unquote.

Man....I love Ace. I truly do. My favorite KISS album? Probably "Love Gun", mainly because of the tunes "Christine Sixteen" and Frehley's "Shock Me". There's a reason why Ace's solo album was the best selling of the four, because he an amazing musician....and he's slightly bugnuts crazy, God bless his little heart.

One thing I find surprising is that a soundtrack album for this flick has never been released (I mean...c'mon....Simmons has capitalized on every other available means to market KISS), and I kinda figured out why: one complaint that fans have about the NBC TV cut is that for a film showcasing musicians, little if any of their music is contained. Well, when one watches the European theatrical cut of the film...one comes to discover that in place of all the Hanna- Barbera incidental library music...there's actual KISS tunes. Plus...it's in widescreen.

Peter Criss (who was reportedly ego filled during the production, as well as allegedly...um....well....drunk as a skunk) is still over-dubbed over by Zan the Wonder Twin from The Super Friends, though (aka voice actor Michael Bell).

Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (also known as KISS in the Attack of the Phantoms) is a 1978 television movie, starring American hard rock band Kiss. The movie's plot revolves around Kiss, who must use their superpowers to battle an evil inventor (Abner Devereaux, played by Anthony Zerbe) and to save a California amusement park from destruction.

The movie was aired by NBC at the height of Kiss's popularity in the United States. While it was one of the highest-rated TV movies of the year, its poor acting and semi-comedic script causes it to be regarded poorly even by most Kiss fans. Despite this or, perhaps, because of this, it has attained cult film status.

The film opens at Magic Mountain, where Melissa (Deborah Ryan) and her boyfriend Sam (Terry Lester) are enjoying a day at the amusement park. Sam, a park employee, disappears early in the film while investigating the laboratory of Abner Devereaux, who is the park's head engineer and the creator of a series of lifelike cybernetic creatures on display throughout the park. It is subsequently revealed that Sam has been transformed by Devereaux into a mindless cyborg through the use of a tiny mind-control device attached to Sam's neck.

Devereaux's increasingly erratic behavior is a cause of concern for Calvin Richards (Carmine Caridi), the owner of the amusement park. Faced with a budget crunch, Richards decides to channel money away from Devereaux's projects in order to pay for a Kiss concert. Richards explains to Devereaux that the concert will generate much-needed revenue, but Devereaux is livid. Later, three punks (dressed like members of a biker gang) sabotage one of the rides, placing a group of riders in danger. Richards blames Devereaux for the incident and fires him. Devereaux swears revenge upon Richards, the park, and Kiss, all of whom he blames for his misfortune.

When Kiss arrives for their show, Devereaux first attempts to discredit them by unleashing a robotic Gene Simmons, which proceeds to damage buildings in the park and to injure a security guard. The next day, Kiss is questioned by Richards and some security guards, but no action is taken. His first plan having failed, Devereaux attempts to sabotage the scheduled Kiss concert. He manages to neutralize Kiss's abilities and imprison them in his underground laboratory. Finally, he sends the fake Kiss onstage, where they perform a version of "Hotter than Hell" (called "Rip and Destroy") with altered lyrics meant to incite the crowd to riot. The real Kiss manage to escape from Devereaux and fly to the stage for a final battle with their robotic doppelgängers. After the real Kiss dispatches the fake version, the concert continues and the crisis is averted.

After the show, Kiss, Melissa, and Richards converge on Devereaux's lab and attempt to convince Devereaux to release Sam from his control. But when his chair is spun around Devereaux, has newly white hair and a frozen expression on his face. It is unknown if Devereaux is now dead, or has slipped into a state of catatonia. The group is despondent, but Stanley stumbles upon the mind control device on Sam's neck and removes it. Sam returns to normal, and with no memory of what had happened.

Kiss's commercial popularity was at its peak by 1978. The group's gross income in 1977 totalled $10.2 million.Creative manager Bill Aucoin felt, however, that the cycle of album releases and touring had taken Kiss as far as they could go, and that it was time to elevate the group's image to the next level. He formulated a plan to cast Kiss as superheroes, a process that began with the 1977 release of a Kiss comic book. The band agreed, and plans were developed for a Kiss movie.

To reinforce the idea of Kiss as superheroes, each member of the group was given superpowers in keeping with the theme of their characters—Gene Simmons (the Demon) could breathe fire and had super strength; Paul Stanley (the Starchild) emitted a beam from his eye that could control minds and allow him to hear "distant" conversations; Ace Frehley (Space Ace) could teleport himself and the group and shoot laser beams from his hands; Peter Criss (the Catman) had super agility, and could leap great distances.

Filming for Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park began in May 1978, and it was produced by Hanna-Barbera, known primarily for cartoons such as Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear (in the late '60s, they filmed and produced the live action series The Banana Splits). Most of the movie was filmed at Magic Mountain in California, with additional filming taking place in the Hollywood Hills. Much of the production was rushed, and the script underwent numerous rewrites. All four members of Kiss were given crash courses on acting.

Prior to completing the script, screenwriters Jan Michael Sherman and Don Buday spent time with each Kiss member, in an effort to get a feel for how they each acted and spoke. Frehley, known for his eccentric behavior, said little to the pair but "Ack!" As a result, Frehley was not originally given any lines, except to interject "Ack!" at various points. In the first draft of the script, Frehley was described as "monosyllabic and super-friendly. Communicating largely through gestures and sounds, Ace might be best described as an other-galactic Harpo Marx."Upon learning of his lack of dialogue, Frehley threatened to leave the project — soon after, lines were written for him.

The band, none of whom had any prior acting experience, had difficulty adjusting to the demands of filming. Frehley and Criss, in particular, became increasingly frustrated with the long periods of downtime normally associated with movie-making. They were both also dealing with increasing levels of substance abuse.

Criss's dialogue in the film had to be over-dubbed by well-known voice actor Michael Bell (who had worked with producer Joseph Barbera on a number of past projects), as he refused to participate in post-production. The only time Criss's actual voice is heard in the movie is during an acoustic performance of "Beth." (Criss denies this story, stating that he "went to all the looping.")

On May 27, the last day of filming, Criss and tour manager Fritz Postlethwaite were involved in a serious car accident. Postlethwaite suffered burns but soon returned to work for Kiss. Criss's injuries were minor.

On a few occasions, Frehley left the set during filming due to arguments with the film's director. In one scene that Frehley abandoned, his African American stunt double can be clearly seen instead.

The concert depicted in the film was recorded in the parking lot of Magic Mountain on May 19, 1978, in front of a crowd of 8,000 people. Tickets for the concert were given out by local radio station KMET. The group performed a full concert, which was followed by lip-synched performances of some songs. "Rip and Destroy," an altered version of "Hotter than Hell" that was featured in the movie, was not performed during the concert.

All four members of KISS despise the movie and smear it even to this day.

Much of this was inspired by the comic book spin-off that starred the characters of the band.

Prior to the movie's airing, a private screening was held for Kiss, as well as their management and friends. Despite the positive reactions from all in attendance, Kiss hated the movie for the buffoonish way it made them appear. For years after its airing, no one who worked for the group was permitted to mention the movie in their presence. Despite the band's displeasure with the results, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park was one of the highest-rated TV movies of 1978

In 1979, Avco-Embassy released Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park in cinemas outside the United States, with translations of the title Attack of the Phantoms. In some countries — Italy, in particular — the film was simply titled Kiss Phantoms. The theatrical release featured a vastly different version of the film, with several scenes that did not appear in the original television airing added to the cut.

The overseas film's overall soundtrack also differed from the original — much of the Hanna-Barbera fight music was replaced by music from the band's own catalog, primarily from their four solo albums. In some edits, the promotional videos for "I Was M ade For Lovin' You" and "Sure Know Something" were also edited into the film.

In recent years, Kiss's public statements concerning the movie have been a mixture of bemusement and disgust. On VH1's When Kiss Ruled the World program, Gene Simmons stated that, "It's a classic movie...classic movie if you're on drugs," while Ace Frehley pejoratively said that "It's the funniest shit I've ever seen." In an early-1990s Sterling-McFadden magazine interview, Simmons compared the film to the infamous B-movie classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, joking that the two movies would make a perfect drive-in double feature.

In the years since its initial airing, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park has achieved cult status, mainly among Kiss fans. It is currently available on DVD as part of Kissology Volume Two: 1978-1991, a collection of concerts and television appearances. (However, this is the re-edited European version, which contains hardly any of Ace Frehley's lines.) Previously, availability was limited to two brief VHS releases in the 1980s and a laserdisc release in 1991. In 2005, distributor Cheezy Flicks attempted to release the original TV movie version of the film on DVD, but due to legal issues, the disc was quickly pulled.

The movie was parodied in the episode of Family Guy named A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas, which featured guest voices from the band. In the episode, clips of a movie called "KISS Saves Santa", which has a similar, semi-comedic script and features Gene Simmons breathing fire, as well as the band neutralizing a group of pterodactyls with the power of their guitars.

The movie was also parodied in the 1991 comedy sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, in which characters Bill and Ted battle with rock and roll doppelgangers who have stolen their identities through a death/time travel incident. They then pay tongue-in-cheek tribute KISS by playing the KISS' "God Gave Rock & Roll to You II" at the end of the film.

In the promo commercial for his 2009 album Anomaly, Frehley referenced his movie character by doing the hitchhiking gesture (which magically teleported CD copies of his album to the hands of his fans) and saying, "Ack!" before riding off.

Originally released in 1961 as Five Minutes to Live, this low-budget crime drama was later re-released as Door-to-Door Maniac. Fred narrates the film in flashback, detailing a suburban bank robbery that goes awry. In his simple plan, he hires a hard-up hood, Johnny Cabot to take the wife of the bank's vice president hostage. Cabot will hold her until he gets a call alerting him that Fred has been successful in getting ransom money. Cabot waits, and watches the Wilson house as the husband leaves for the bank and their young son heads off to school. Posing as a door-to-door guitar instructor, he forces his way into the house and takes Nancy Wilson hostage. At the bank, Fred talks his way into Ken Wilson's office, and presents his personal check for $70,000, intending that Wilson will withdraw the funds to cover the check as a ransom for his wife. He has Wilson call home to prove that Nancy is being held by the unstable Cabot, and gives Wilson 5 minutes to make his decision. If Fred fails to call the house back, Cabot is to kill Nancy. Wilson confesses to Fred that he has been planning to run off to Las Vegas with Ellen, the woman he has been having an affair with, and Fred will be doing him a favor by getting rid of Nancy. But as the minutes tick by, Wilson cracks and agrees to give him the money. Fred make the first call to save Nancy. The clock starts ticking again, another 5 minutes, for Fred to collect the money and get out of the bank safely. While Fred is working on Wilson, Nancy is terrorized by Cabot-- manhandled and shot at, invited to slip into something more comfortable (which she does in a futile attempt to distract him) and finally forced to listen to him serenade her with "Five Minutes to Live" and "I've Come to Kill" while he waits for the second call. The call hasn't come as Fred has been overpowered by the police, who were alerted by the bank's silent alarm. Cabot is getting more and more stressed. While worrying about Fred not calling, he is completely thrown by Little Bobby arriving home for lunch just as the police arrive at the Wilson house. Cabot panics, grabs Bobby and runs into the yard under police fire. Bobby fakes his death to save himself, and Cabot is shot by a cop in the yard. Nancy is reunited with her now-contrite husband, who decides he will still go to Las Vegas, but with Nancy.

While shopping in a local K-Mart, I ran across this little flick and couldn't resist the purchase (it was a $1.99). I'm a fan of Cash and found the film fairly fascinating, enough so to dig through my CD collection and track down two versions of the song Cash had recorded.

Captain Lou Albano Tribute

Words fail me whenever it comes to eulogizing those that brought me joy and laughter as a child, so I'll let Cyndi Lauper do it for me:

Today I found out that Capt. Lou had passed away. He passed away at home with his family beside him. I am sad for his family and I'm just sad. But I know he's at peace now. He had been ill for a while. My heart goes out to his family.

Capt Lou and I became famous together. He always made me laugh. He made all that promotion we did so much fun. He graced me with a lot of video performances that I will always treasure. He was a great, gregarious, hilarious fellow who had this lovable presence. I was lucky to work by his side. I will always look back on our absolute hilarious times and the magical world of Wrestling he introduced me to and shared for that brief time. As he said, he took me up the charts from 10, to 5, to 4 to 1, to minus 5 back up to 1 again. And it was great fun too.

So let me just say this; I love ya Lou and I can picture you up there somewhere explaining that PEG principle to someone. Or maybe you're having a good laugh with Freddie Blassie. But where ever you are, I am sure you are causing a hilarious rucuss. And I will be sad to miss out on that."

"The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" was a single released by singer Cyndi Lauper for The Goonies, a 1985 film which was released at the same time as this single.

A rarity

Before its inclusion on The Essential Cyndi Lauper in 2003, the song was considered a rarity among fans, having never appeared on any of Lauper's albums or the 1995 compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some. Lauper admitted in an interview with Matthew Rettenmund for his 1996 book Totally Awesome 80s: A Lexicon of the Music, Videos, Movies, TV Shows, Stars, and Trends of that Decadent Decade that she hated the song, which was why she had chosen not to include it on her first compilation.

All versions of the UK edition are considered rare, especially the 12".

The song has been covered by a few artists, such as Bombones, Haruko Momoi, New Found Glory, and Tomoyuki Uchida. The song was also featured as an instrumental version in Pop'n Music 10.

There was also a two-part video shot for this song featuring World Wrestling Federation pro-wrestlers André the Giant, Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Wendy Richter, The Fabulous Moolah, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Freddie Blassie; Steven Spielberg; The Goonies cast (except for Kerri Green, Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano, Robert Davi and John Matuszak); and the relatively unknown Bangles as a group of female pirates. Roseanne Barr appears as the "sea hag". Lauper's mother appears as "Cyndi's mother", reprising her role from "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

According to Cyndi Lauper, the music video was less than an enjoyable experience. Richard Donner, apparently, was a pushy director and wanted things done a certain way and forced Lauper to keep going, even when she was exhausted. In a behind-the-scenes documentary of the video, you can see Donner being pushy and doing lots of takes on scenes.

Part 1 of the video debuted on MTV before The Goonies opened in theaters and Part 2 premiered on MTV after the movie opened. On the DVD of The Goonies, both parts have been spliced together to form one video with no chapter change in the middle of the two. Part 1 of the music video had an extended version released in Japan. The version included more commentary from the voice over during the opening sequence of the video and extended scenes inside the gas station and with the wrestlers.

Both parts of the video are included as a bonus feature on the DVD release of The Goonies. The first part of the video almost did not make it on the DVD. According to sources, Warner was unable to locate a decent print of Part 1 and was only going to use Part 2 for the DVD release, but someone at VH1 found an unused tape of the video and they digitized it for the DVD just in time.

Mighty Marvel Mosterbash 2009: KISS- "Destroyer" (

Seeing as how I shared the 1977 Marvel Comics Super Special dedicated to the band over at this blog's sister site, Who's Who...Cares?, I figured I'd run with the theme and share KISS' iconic "Destroyer" album here. While not my favorite of the band's 1970s output (I really dig the "Hotter Than Hell" album from 1974), there's no denying the facts that it's quite possibly the most popular and best selling of the band's discography....

Another reason(s) was my recent discovery that today was the release date for the band's first album of new material recorded in 11 years, entitled "Sonic Boom" (which I think is being marketted in much the same way that AC/DC's recent "Black Ice" was...as a Wal-Mart exclusive. Wal-Mart...where prices are dropping everyday...and old hard rock acts go to pasture...) and my disdain for the fact that they are yet again employing the band's trademark make-up personas....yet, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are not part of the line-up.

Nope, filling the "Catman" and "Star-Child" roles on stage these days are veteran drummer Eric Singer and former Black n Blue guitarist Tommy Thayer.

At least the late Eric Carr, during the short time he was asked to adopt a make-uped (sic?) persona (the "Fox-Man") chose something original, though I doubt this was a move Thayer or Singer pushed for, and was suggested to them by Simmons (who, admittedly, has a pretty amazing hand at promotion and is an accounting whiz) and/or whatever people are controlling the corporate trademarks that the band has become.

I just wanted to give people a taste of when the band still had a little bit of street cred....and with the Who's Who...Cares? post, show that at one point even though it all was for show and creating marketable merchandising material, they were a hell of alot more original at doing it the past....

Lenny and the Squigtones is a fictional musical group headed by Michael McKean and David Lander, the two actors who played the characters Lenny and Squiggy on the television series Laverne & Shirley. Recorded live at the Roxy in Hollywood, they perform parodies of 50's rock ballads ("Night After Night," "Creature Without A Head"). In between, there's plenty of schtick and patter ("So's Your Old Testament," "Babyland"). The group's eponymous debut album, Lenny & Squiggy sing Lenny and the Squigtones, was released on the Casabl anca label in 1979. The album is now a collector’s item because of credited guitar work by future Spinal Tap member Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest). A photo on the inside cover also includes two band members who look a lot like Derek Smalls and David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap. Heavy Metal: Music From the Motion Picture (Columbia, 1981)

This double album set has been part of my collection for years...another one of those screwed up childhood memories. I can remember seeing the trailer for HEAVY METAL as a kid and immediately being fascinated with what the film was about (the trailer was at the head of a screening of STRIPES, which my parents went to see at the Sunset Drive-In, located at the cross-roads of Panhandle, Ohio...a small little 'burg about 7 or 8 miles outside of my hometown).

Above: Totally kick-ass one-sheet which hangs in my bathroom, purchased from eBay a few years back.

The next summer, an uncle (who was far more lenient than my parents) took me to see this flick at the very same drive-in (it was playing on a double bill with Heartbeeps (WTF?!?), and over years of repeat late-night pay cable viewings, this soundtrack became burned into my brain. Especially the Cheap Trick track, "Reach Out", which seems to be only available on this release, nowhere else....which drives a Cheap Trick fanatic like myself absolutely insane. Plus, local "classic rock" stations seemt to base their playlists around Hagar's "Heavy Metal" (Sammy Hagar is another artist that I am fanatically devoted to) and Don Felder's "(Taking A Ride On) Heavy Metal"....hell, you can almost set your watch by a local station's use of the Felder song.

The Oceans- Super Fuzz (Super Snooper) OST (1980)

A long-time friend that I recently reconnected with (all too briefly, a situation I plan on changing as soon as work and automotive troubles allow me) reminded me of this flick a few weeks ago.

Back during the days when HBO stood for "Hey! Beastmaster's On!", I can remember watching this several times...and then the memory popped back up after watching my recently acquired DVD copy of SUPER FUZZ (the U.S. distribution title), and my mother jogging my memory...I had actually seen SUPER FUZZ during it's theatrical release at the Mound Drive-In (now defunct) located outside Peebles, Ohio as a child.

Now, for a little background (from Wikipedia):

Super Fuzz or Poliziotto superpiù is an Italian film about Dave Speed, a bumbling Miami police officer who gains super powers through accidental nuclear exposure. Directed by Sergio Corbucci and starring Terence Hill and Ernest Borgnine, it was released in 1980.

Now...I am a goddamn TRON fanatic, and have been since childhood. And after viewing the uber-cool teaser for next summer's TRON: LEGACY, to say that I am stoked is beyond belief.

Then, there's the fact that LEGACY is gonna be presented in IMAX 3-D....I'm already trying to book my seats. As for the soundtrack...hell, I even dig the Journey track, "Only Solutions" that's on this thing.

The Legend of the Lone Ranger OST (MCA-1565, 1981)

First off, a bit of history via our ol' friend, Wikipedia:

"The Lone Ranger is an American, long-running, old-time radio and early television show created by George W. Trendle and developed by writer Fran Striker.

The eponymous character is a masked Texas Ranger in the American Old West, originally played by Paul Halliwell, who gallops about righting injustices with the aid of his clever, laconic Potawatomi Native American assistant, Tonto. Departing on his white horse Silver, the Ranger would famously say "Hi-yo, Silver, away!" as the horse galloped toward the setting sun.

The first of 2,956 episodes of The Lone Ranger premiered on radio January 30, 1933 on WXYZ radio in Detroit, Michigan and later on the Mutual Broadcasting System radio network and then on NBC's Blue Network (which became ABC, which broadcast the show's last new episode on September 3, 1954). Elements of the Lone Ranger story were first used in an earlier series Fran Striker wrote for a station in Buffalo, New York. Originally, the character's true identity was not revealed, though it was hinted that behind the mask he might be a historical Western hero (such as Wild Bill Hickok). Then, after a preliminary version of the character's now-standard origin appeared in the Republic movie serial of 1938 and elements of that story were worked into the radio series, the hero was revealed to be a Texas Ranger named Reid, who was one of six Texas Rangers chasing the Cavendish Gang. After entering a canyon known as "Bryant's Gap," the party finds itself in a murderous ambush arranged by Butch Cavendish, leader of the "Hole in the Wall Gang" and a man named Collins, who has infiltrated the Rangers for the gang as a scout, that seemingly leaves every ranger dead. Then Cavendish shoots Collins in the back, reasoning that someone who would betray the Rangers could also betray his gang.

Reid's childhood friend, a Native American known as Tonto (his tribe was seldom specified, but some books say he was probably supposed to be an Apache, while the radio programs identified him as a Potawatomi), comes upon the massacre and discovers Reid is still alive. Tonto takes him to safety and nurses him back to health. Tonto reminds Reid of when they were young, and Reid had rescued Tonto after renegade Indians had murdered his mother and sister and left him for dead. Reid gave him a horse, and Tonto insisted that Reid accept a ring. It is by this ring that Tonto recognizes Reid.

Okay, now that the long-winded part is over with, let's get to a real oddity....

I can vaguely remember the HUGE push Columbia Pictures made to try and make the film that the following soundtrack/original score belongs to (I even own a few of the action figures released from the period), 1981's The Legend of the Lone Ranger, again with the Wikipedia:

"The film was released to massive publicity in 1981 and did poorly. Box office receipts were far short of the amount needed to recoup the costs of the film, and critical reviews were almost unanimously negative. Despite the presence of renowned actors in supporting roles, including Christopher Lloyd as villain Butch Cavendish and Jason Robards as President Ulysses S. Grant, the film vanished from theaters rapidly. The actor playing the Ranger (Klinton Spilsbury) has never appeared in another film, while the actor portraying Tonto, Michael H orse, has done somewhat better, appearing in many minor films and as a regular on the Canadian television series North of 60 as well as the American series Twin Peaks."

Space Western!

I was bored, so I figured it was time for another compilation EP, this time centering on tunes of a country and western bent that have subtle science fiction undertones or just outright connections to the genre....

Contained on this disc are the following:
- The 1978 Tom T. Hall oddity (a favorite of mine), "May the Force Be With You Always"
- "The Ballad of Serenity", the opening theme to Firefly
- "Guitar, Cadillacs, etc.," by Dwight Yoakam, which appeared in the barroom scene (containing a nekkid Ah-nold) from Terminator 2: Judgement Day
- "The Cave", a tune near and dear to my heart, whose lyrics play out like some oddball country and western version of a "Twilight Zone" episode. Plus, it was performed by a relative of mine, second cousin Johnny Paycheck (of "Take This Job and Shove It" fame).
- "Benson, Arizona", a tight little ditty penned by director John Carpenter for his debut film, Dark Star.
- and, finally..."That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine", performed by Gene Autry, from the Mascot cliffhanger serial, The Phantom Empire (1936).

I love this film, which I discovered after purchasing a copy of the long-OOP VHS about 12 years ago. It serves as a reminder of some of my favorite places growing up in rural Ohio...the local drive-in movie theaters.

Much to my astonishment, I came to discover that Columbia never issued a soundtrack album for this flick....so, after a little research on the ol' IMDB, I was able to compile one myself. It's a wealth of late 1960s/1970s "classic" country music.....I've always been fond of the Loretta Lynn and Ronnie Milsap tracks found here, and for years I've always thought that the Statler Brothers' "Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott" belonged on a film soundtrack somewheres...

I was a hard-core fan of David Lynch's little television masterpiece when I was in high school during it's original network airings, and through my fascination with the show, I discovered one of my favorite composers: Angelo Badalamenti.

Though not my favorite of his works (his collaboration with Lynch on The Straight Story, which is probably my favorite Lynch film, would be my pick), the Twin Peaks stuff is haunting and mesmerizing at the same time.

Oh man. There's really nothing I can say about this one, because I'm pretty speechless.....other than the first track sounds kinda like an Eagles tune....if they were Cantonese.

Doctor Mordrid OST- Richard Band (1993)

Even though I am a B-Movie fan, I never took a liking to any of Charles and Richard Band's Full Moon output. I was a HUGE fan of the Bands stuff from the early 1980s (mostly done under the Empire films label) like the first TRANCERS, ROBOT JOX, etc.,...

There was one exception, though....and that was DOCTOR MORDRID. I've loved this rip-off of Marvel Comics' Dr, Strange since I first saw it via video rental in the early 1990s.....Jeffery Combs is pretty good in it, taking an odd turn playing the hero of this little cinematic endeavor. Fun stuff....I still need to get this on DVD (I think they finally got around to doing a release...I know for awhile there were some legal hassles that were holding it up).

I've looked for this UK release for years, after first watching a late-night TBS "100% Weird" broadcast of Thunderbirds Are Go! and Thunderbird 6 in my teens...

The Traits-"Nobody Loves The Hulk" (1970) 45RPM

I know very little about this single other than it was advertised for mail order purchase in some Marvel comics magazines cover dated 1970.

After giving it a listen, the tune itself sounds like a a garage band of the era ripping off riffs and beats from one hit wonder the Strawberry Alarm Clock's psychedelic rock hit, "Incense and Peppermints" with weird-ass lyrics involving the Incredible Hulk....

I've tried to dig up some info on the band, The Traits, but have found little other than it is not the same Traits helmed by Roy Head (writer and performer of the 1965 tune, "Treat Her Right", later covered by Billy "Crash" Craddock, Barbara Mandrell, and George Thorogood). Slickdpdx of Knownunknowns has this to say:

"I heard that it was a promotional item that was never released. Forgotten about, it was left to rot in a warehouse in Queens until its discovery decades later."

More than likely, this may be the case.

Juctice League: The New Frontier OST

I really enjoyed the animated adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's wonderful comic book mini-series, and recently came into possession of a copy of the CD release of the original score, which is phenomenal.

The tracks sound like a wonderful mix of the works of Wagner and Danny Elfman, yet with composer Kevin Manthei expressing enough of a flourish to stamp the work as his own. Great stuff....it's what I'd always imagined superheroes to "sound" like.

Christmas Countdown 2008: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Original Soundtrack (Decca Records, 1964)

For years, I've had a deep and heartfelt love for the Rankin-Bass "Animagic" work, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the reason for it....

One of the things I find utterly amazing about this Christmas special (along with A Charlie Brown Christmas, which I'll talk about later this month) is the longevity of this thing. Rudolph alone has been airing continuously every holiday season for 44 years, it's first broadcast having been December 6th, 1964 on the NBC network.

I was going to rant along in this blog about the fact that a sign of the decline of our civilization in the new century can probably be traced back to the fact that It's A Wonderful Life is no longer in the public domain...Christmas just doesn't seem right these days when outside of my DVD copy, the only way I can watch Frank Capra's classic is the now-annual single broadcast that NBC provides us (who sanpped up all rights to the flick around 1992 or '93, I believe), when as a youth it was a staple of the holiday season to see it broadcast multiple times all over the television dial, especially on those crazy independent stations on the UHF band, and....outside of holiday childrens' programming on specialized basic cable channels such as Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network, there have been no new animated (cel-based or "Animagic") Christmas specials produced for network television in nearly 20 years. But, I gave it a second thought...and figured it just wasn't right to complain about one's lot in life during the holidays, because if Rudolph and Hermie taught me anything as a child, it was that no matter how bad things look....every dog (or reindeer, in this case) has his/her day.

I also gave some thought about going into a long-winded and detailed history behind the holiday special, but another site, TVParty, has already done an amazing job at doing this and I highly recommend you take a look.

So.....all that's really left to do is share some holiday cheer by sharing the soundtrack album of this holiday classic, I guess...though, as an added bonus, right click here to get an MP3 of Smiley Burnette's version of the classic Christmas tune. Everybody's heard Gene Autry's version (a guy who Burnette played comedy relief to in about a dozen or more films), but hardly anyone remembers this one....

Guitar Wolf Discography Part One

I'm a huge fan of the Japanese horror cult film Wild Zero, which is where I discovered the joy of Guitar Wolf.

From Wikipedia:

Guitar Wolf is a three-piece garage punk band founded in Japan in 1987. The band is known for songs with piercing vocals and an extremely loud style of noise rock which emphasizes heavy distortion and feedback. They coined the phrase "Jet Rock 'n' Roll", which they also used to describe their musical style — an energetic cross between The Ramones, rockabilly, classic punk, and noise rock. It is a part of Sony Music Japan's Ki/oon Records division.

The band has released nine studio albums internationally as well as a live album, numerous singles, and a greatest hits album called "Golden Black." The band members have also been featured in two B-grade science fiction horror movies, "Wild Zero" and "Sore Losers." A collection of Guitar Wolf's most popular videos and live performances have been compiled into a limited edition DVD entitled Red Idol. In March 2005, bassist and founding member Billy, also known as Bass Wolf, died of a heart attack at the age of 38. His replacement in the band, bassist U.G., has become a permanent member of Guitar Wolf and now rounds out the trio which currently consist of band members Seiji (Guitar Wolf): U.G. (Bass Wolf); and Toru (Drum Wolf).

Curse of the Werewolf (Power Records, 1975)

The werewolf film genre has always been a thorn in my side for years....the only reason I tend to dislike it is simply a question of originality.

I mean, outside of Universal Pictures' classic The Wolf Man and The Howling (and remember, everything in this blog is personally my opinion, and you know what they say about those...), I find that every werewolf film produced is basically a rehash of the same friggin' story....

So, having said that...I still have no clue whatsoever why I like the Marvel Comics' character Jack Russell, Werewolf by Night....maybe it's the thought that the character was named after an absolutely cute little breed of dog that I adore....

The Mighty Marvel Monsterbash 2008 continues!!!

The first BLADE film has been cited as being the harbinger of the current wave of popularity in comic book and superhero properties in Hollywood. It certainly turned the tide on Marvel's lengthy string of bad luck concerning adaptations of their characters on the silver screen....

It's one of the few film adaptations of a comic book property in which I can honestly say that there were some drastic changes made from the source material, yet no one really complained...

Late last month, an idol of mine passed on.

Jerry Reed Hubbard (March 20, 1937 – August 31, 2008), known professionally as Jerry Reed, was an American country music singer, country guitarist, session musician, songwriter, and actor who appeared in over a dozen films. As a singer, he may be best known for "Amos Moses", and "When You're Hot, You're Hot", for which he received the G rammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1972 and "East Bound and Down", the theme song to the first Smokey and the Bandit movie in which he portrayed the "Snowman", Cledus Snow.

Reed was not only an amazing song-writer and guitarist, but a damn good humorist, as well.

Plus....he was on an episode of Scooby Doo...

Unknown Hinson- The Voice of Squidbillies

I love Adult Swim's Squidbillies. I'm a sucker (as I've said in the past when commenting on Junior Samples) for rural corn-fed humor. But, much like another of my favorite Adult Swim shows, Minoriteam, I love Squidbillies because.....well....it's so....wrong....that it's funny. And...I'm of the belief that with every terrible stereotype, there's a small grain of truth, and the only way we as a culture can overcome stereotyping of any sort is by staring them face-on and showing how ridiculous they actually are....

...and, boy....does Squidbillies deliver in that department.

Stuart Daniel Baker, better known by his stage name, Unknown Hinson, is a musician, songwriter, and voice actor on the Adult Swim cartoon Squidbillies.

Baker has carefully cultivated his alter-ego. Much like Andy Kaufman's alter-ego, Tony Clifton, Unknown Hinson never breaks character in public and adamantly denies having any connection to Danny Baker.

Persona

Unknown Hinson, dressed in his signature rodeo tailor coat and black ribbon necktie, is a dark parody of the country western stars from the early/mid 20th century. With his glued on sideburns, blacked out front teeth, and dark hair slicked back to reveal a prominent widows peak, he has been referred to as the "hillbilly vampire".
The self-proclaimed "king of country-western troubadours" speaks and sings with an exaggerated southern drawl, commonly mis-pronouncing words like woman "womern", and window "winder".
Hinson's personality is that of a hell raising and hard drinking country-western singer with a preference for "party liquor", sexy women, and fine guitars.

Fictional Background

Unknown Hinson was an only child, named after his father “says right there on my birth certificate - Mama: Miss Hinson. Daddy: Unknown.” and raised by his mother, who gave him his first guitar. After his mother’s mysterious disappearance, Unknown ran off and joined the circus as part of the sideshow, where he learned how to lift 50-pound weights with his tongue, among various other skills.

Later, Hinson was imprisoned for 30 years, convicted of various trumped-up charges, including three counts of murder, 19 paternity suits, vampirism and random grave-robbing offenses. He was released in 1993 to reclaim his long-denied musical legacy.

Origins

Stuart Daniel Baker, a music teacher and studio musician from Albemarle, North Carolina, created his alter-ego for The Wild Wild South, a Charlotte area public-access program that featured comedy sketches and concert footage. Baker along with co-star Don Swan played the characters of Unknown Hinson and Rebel Helms. After Swan's death in 1992, Baker created "The Unknown Hinson Show", a direct spin-off of "The Wild Wild South". The Unknown Hinson Show won Creative Loafing's "Best Of" poll for Best Public-Access Television Show four years in a row.
After the series ended, Baker continued in his role as Unknown Hinson, performing live concerts and releasing several recordings.

Voice Acting
anny Baker provides the voice of Early Cuyler, a balding hillbilly squid from Georgia, on Cartoon Network's late night Adult Swim program, Squidbillies. The Early character has many echoes of Unknown Hinson, including an affinity for guns and liquor, and a "no-nonsense" alpha-male attitude.

The only reason I purchased this CD way back was because of the inclusion of a Matthew Sweet track, a man of which I'm a big fan of (particularly of his best known album "Girlfriend" from 1991), but over the years have grown to enjoy a few of the other songs on it, especially the Spacehog, Jewel and Heather Nova tunes...

Finally, at long last....

I've been wanting to share this album for quite awhile....so, here it is: one of my Top Five favorite films of all time: Flash Gordon (1980).

From Wikipedia:

Flash Gordon is a 1980 album by English rock band Queen. It is the soundtrack album to the science fiction movie Flash Gordon.

All but two of the tracks on the album ("Flash's Theme" and "The Hero") are instrumentals. The album makes extensive use of synthesizers, which Queen had employed for the first time on their previous album, 'The Game'.

"Flash's Theme" was the only single to be released from the album, under the title "Flash". It reached number 10 in the UK charts and number 42 in the US. The track is notable for its pounding, repetitive bassline and the camp humour of the snippets of dialogue from the movie that it contains. The last track, "The Hero", while an individual song, reprises the main motif from "Flash's Theme".

"Flash"

There are two versions of the song. The album version ("Flash's Theme") is in fact the start to the movie, with all the dialog from the first scene. The single version ("Flash") however features parts of the dialog taken from various parts of the movie. This version was also included on the "Greatest Hits" compilation from 1981.

The single reached number one in Austria.
